Microblading VS. Nanobrows: Which is better?

If you've been considering having permanent makeup brows done, you've probably come across the debate between microblading and nanobrows and wondered which is best. As a permanent makeup artist of 7 years, I have a lot of input on this one!

First, what is microblading?

Microblading is a permanent makeup technique done with a manual microblade. This is the technique that made permanent makeup brows grow in popularity in the more recent years. Microblading can be a beautiful technique when done by a highly skilled artist.

What are the 'Cons' of microblading?

Microblading is often advertised as a beginner-friendly service for new permanent makeup artists, and this is where it often goes wrong! Microblading is a very detailed and specific technique that takes a lot of practice. New brow artists tend to struggle with depth, causing scarring and blurred hairstrokes. Ever seen someone with old microblading that looks like one big spotty, blue/grey blob? This is not because they chose microblading, it's because they chose the wrong artist!

Who is microblading good for?

Microblading is one of the more "picky" techniques. It is only recommended for clients with normal to dry skin, and clients who don't have very thin or very thick skin. You may not be a good candidate if you have oily skin, thick/porous skin, thin/mature skin, or skin that is prone to scarring. Microblading is a very natural hair-like style, great for clients who want to add fullness to the eyebrows without looking filled-in.

So, what are nanobrows?

Nanobrows are done by adding hair-like strokes to the eyebrows using a tattoo machine and very fine needle. This is a very popular service because it greatly reduces the chance of scarring (compared to microblading). Adding hairstrokes with a machine vs. a manual microblade allows your artist more creative freedom over where they place the hairstrokes, making it a more favorable style for artists as well!

Who are nanobrows good for?

Nanobrows can be done on almost any skin type! The only skin type I normally wouldn't recommend them for is client's with very thick/porous skin as they usually do best with a shading technique (powder brows).

So is one "better" than the other?

No, not necessarily! In fact we still choose to offer both techniques at Gentle Spirit Beauty as we find there's a perfect style for every client.
